Discovering the Bulloak Jewel
Toowoomba, Queensland — A hidden conservation story took centre stage in Toowoomba this week as Natura Pacific launched its latest Back from the Brink documentary, A Tiny Butterfly with a Big Story, shining a spotlight on the remarkable Bulloak Jewel butterfly and the people working to protect it.
The documentary was officially launched at Toowoomba City Library, bringing together scientists, conservation practitioners, land managers, local government representatives and members of the community to explore the story of one of Queensland’s lesser-known butterflies.
The launch featured an expert panel facilitated by Professor Roger Kitching, Professor of Ecology at Griffith University, who guided a discussion about the butterfly, its habitat and the collaborative conservation work needed to ensure its future.
Joining Professor Kitching on the panel were Councillor Tim McMahon, Louise Skidmore, Matt Head and Don Sands, each bringing a different perspective to the conversation — from science and community involvement to land management and local government.
The panel highlighted an important message: conservation is not the responsibility of one person or organisation. Protecting threatened species requires collaboration between scientists, landholders, government, conservation organisations and local communities.
“The Bulloak Jewel may be tiny, but its story is anything but small. It is a story about discovery, science, habitat and, most importantly, people coming together to protect the species and places that make our region unique.”
Through Back from the Brink, Natura Pacific aims to bring threatened species stories to a wider audience and inspire practical conservation action beyond the screen.
The Bulloak Jewel documentary explores the species and the conservation efforts surrounding it, giving audiences an opportunity to learn more about the butterfly while meeting some of the people working on the ground to understand and protect its habitat.
Following the screening, guests had the opportunity to take part in the panel discussion, asking questions and exploring the challenges and opportunities facing threatened species conservation in the region.
From Watching to Action
The launch is part of Natura Pacific’s broader Back from the Brink initiative, which connects storytelling with practical conservation.
Audiences can watch the documentary, listen to the podcast episode and explore the Back from the Brink Action Hub, which provides further information, resources and ways for the community to get involved in conservation.
Natura Pacific hopes the Bulloak Jewel’s story will encourage people to look more closely at the threatened species living around them — and recognise that even the smallest species can have a big story to tell.
