City of Gold Coast

Koala Conservation Program

In early 2019, Natura Education won the contract to deliver the City of Gold Coast’s Koala Conservation Education Program (KCEP) as incursions to local schools. Ten schools were identified as the most important schools on the Gold Coast for koala conservation, based on their proximity to priority koala habitat and recorded koala sightings. Designed and delivered to year 4 and 7 students, the program provided the opportunity for local school students to develop their knowledge and understanding of koalas and their habitat, as well as the current threats and conservation measures affecting the species. Students engaged in methods currently used by scientists, to check for evidence of koala activity and habitat health within their school grounds. They also identified koala food trees and potential threats to koala survival within the area. Some students were fortunate to enough to have koalas present during their field studies.
